Grizzlies hang on to knock off Sixers
Jan 29, 2013 - 3:37 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay provided the go-ahead basket with 13.3 seconds left to lift the Memphis Grizzlies to a 103-100 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday.Jerryd Bayless missed a jumper with 17.9 ticks showing, but Gay cleaned up the miss and knocked down a floater in the middle of the lane to put the Grizzlies up 101-100.
Nick Young's jumper on Philadelphia's ensuing possession rimmed out before Gay, who finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists, netted a pair of free throws with 1.2 seconds left.
The Sixers, though, had one last chance to tie the game. Following a timeout, Young took the inbounds pass and fired up a desperation 3-pointer from the right wing, but Marc Gasol swatted it away to seal the win.
Gasol scored 27 points to go with seven boards and seven assists and Bayless, who started in place of Mike Conley, scored 21 points and dished out nine assists for Memphis, winners in three of its last four. Conley sat with an injured ankle.
"We were a little flat early, then in the second quarter we blitzed them," said Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins. "In the third, we thought we had control of the game, then it looked like they were going to have it."
Evan Turner scored 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting and also dished out seven assists. Thaddeus Young poured in 23 points and pulled down seven boards for the Sixers, who haven't won back-to-back games since winning three straight from Nov. 25-30.
Jrue Holiday, who was named to his first All-Star game last week, scored 18 points and dished out 10 assists in the setback.
"Our guys played really well, they played hard, it was a tough loss," said Sixers head coach Doug Collins. "I told them (after the game) that I was not disappointed in them, I was disappointed for them."
The game was tied at 79-79 entering the final frame. The Grizzlies scored the first five points of the period to take an 84-79 lead just 45 seconds in, but the Sixers responded with an 11-6 swing to tie the game at 90-90 three minutes later.
The teams traded baskets from there until Holiday's 17-footer with just over three minutes left gave Philadelphia a 100-97 lead.
Zach Randolph tipped in Gay's miss with just under one minute to go to pull the Grizzlies within 100-99. Nick Young then bricked a deep trey before Gay knocked down the go-ahead basket.
The Sixers led 33-20 after the first quarter, but Memphis exploded for 37 points in the second to take a 57-54 lead into the break.
