Grizzlies fight from behind, top Pistons in overtime

Nov 2, 2013 - 5:45 AM Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Marc Gasol scored five of his 15 points in the final 42 seconds of regulation to tie the game and send the Memphis Grizzlies to an eventual 111-108 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons at FedExForum.

Gasol converted a three-point play after Greg Monroe fouled him on a jump shot. The center then tipped in a basket to tie the game at 95-95 with 8.2 seconds left in the game, forcing an overtime session.

Mike Conley had 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, leading a group of four Grizzlies in double digits. Zach Randolph contributed 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Memphis' eighth straight win against the Pistons.

First-year head coach David Joerger won his first NBA game after the Grizzlies lost to San Antonio 101-94 on Wednesday.

"It felt good to get the win for Coach Joerger and to get the bad taste out of our mouths from the previous game. I like easy wins, but this was a good win. We wanted to get the first win at home. The fans, as always, helped us a lot. Especially, when we were down seven with a couple minutes to go. I think they gave us that extra push that we needed," said Gasol.

Josh Smith led the Pistons with 19 points and three blocks, while Rodney Stuckey also contributed with 19 points off the bench. Andre Drummond had a game-high 16 rebounds in Detroit's first loss of the season.

"I think we need to stay calm, everything was a little frantic. We took some tough shots but we played really good tonight. We showed a lot of fight, and we played hard. We know what we need to do for the next time we play them," said Pistons' guard Chauncey Billups.

Randolph and Conley both drained a pair of free throws to put the Grizzlies up by four early in overtime. Tayshaun Prince tacked on a trey with a little over two minutes left to put Memphis up by five.

The Pistons went down 106-97 but got within five with 14 seconds left after Bynum was fouled on a layup. The Grizzlies then put the game away at the free throw line.

Jerryd Bayless took a dish from Kosta Koufos and drained a 25-foot three to extend the Grizzlies' lead to six points, 34-28, at 6:22 in the second quarter.

Detroit took the lead on an 11-2 run to end the third. A three from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ignited the stretch, while Bayless' pull-up jumper tied the game with 28.5 seconds left in the quarter.

After Gasol's dominant fourth quarter stretch, Billups missed a three off an inbound to send the game into overtime.
