Final
Gasol, Lakers edge Hawks
Nov 4, 2013 - 6:23 AMVideo
Atlanta trailed by as many as 12 in the final frame, but managed to cut the deficit to two points following Korver's 3-pointer from 30 feet out with 1:16 left.
After Steve Nash and Xavier Henry both missed runners with the clock winding down, Paul Millsap knocked down a baseline jumper to tie the game.
The Lakers called a timeout and turned to Gasol, but the big man missed a hook shot from the middle of the paint. Jordan Hill, though, was there to clean up the miss and LA reset.
Steve Nash took the ball from the top of the key and drew in a pair of defenders before finding Gasol with a no-look bounce pass. Gasol dribbled once before steamrolling Millsap as he passed to Hill on the baseline.
Millsap, however had a foot on the lane of the restricted area and Gasol was awarded a pair of free throws, which he converted.
Korver's trey from the corner with two seconds left was blocked and Jodie Meeks stole a pass from Al Horford as he fell out of bounds to seal the win.
"We had a good defensive play on their final play and we got the shot block. Our guys were not going to lose this game," Henry said.
Gasol finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Henry scored a team-high 18 points and Nick Young chipped in with 13 points and four assists off the bench for the Lakers, who had dropped their last two after stunning the LA Clippers on opening night.
Korver dropped in a game-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Millsap and Jeff Teague finished with 14 points apiece for the Hawks, who got 12 points and 16 rebounds from Horford.
"I'm happy how our guys responded in the second half. We put ourselves in a position where we had to respond, we don't want to get down that many points," Atlanta head coach Mike Budenholzer said.
The Lakers took a 33-22 lead after the first quarter before pushing their spread to 21 in the second following a Young jumper just under three minutes in.
Atlanta managed to cut the deficit to 13 by the end of the half at 62-49.
The Lakers pushed the lead back to 17 following a pair of Wesley Johnson free throws with 1:42 left, but the Hawks scored the final five points of the frame to make it 88-76 entering the final frame.
