Irving, who entered the tilt averaging 27.4 points per game in his last five against New York, shot 14-of-23 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the arc as Cleveland won for the fourth time in five games.
Jarrett Jack added 17 points off the bench for Cleveland, while Tristan Thompson and C.J. Miles went for 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the triumph.
"The first thing we wanted to try to clean up here and take care of was the defensive end of the floor," said Cleveland head coach Mike Brown. "We wanted to try to establish a certain culture here."
Carmelo Anthony poured in 29 points for New York, which lost its second consecutive game. Amar'e Stoudemire scored 15 points, J.R. Smith chipped in 14 and Pablo Prigioni dished out a season-high nine assists in extended minutes off the bench.
"This is all new to me. I've never started a season this way, 5-15," said Stoudemire. "The only way for me to deal with it is to continue to get better, stay positive, keep working hard and see what happens."
Two days after finding themselves in a 25-3 hole against Boston, the Knicks trailed 27-9 early in the contest Tuesday.
New York's bench fueled a second quarter charge that made it 48-45 at halftime in favor of the Cavs, but Cleveland pulled away in the third after Irving outscored the entire Knicks' starting unit, 12-11, in the frame.
Thompson and Alonzo Gee added eight points apiece and the Cavs led 81-65 heading into the fourth.
Jack scored five straight early in the fourth to end New York's comeback hopes.
