Sullinger, Lee help Celtics edge Knicks
Dec 14, 2013 - 7:36 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jared Sullinger had 19 points and six rebounds, while Courtney Lee chipped in 18 points as the Boston Celtics topped the New York Knicks 90-86 on Friday night.Avery Bradley netted 13 points to go with six rebounds for Boston, which has won four of its last six games.
Carmelo Anthony poured in 26 points and Andrea Bargnani added 22 points, seven boards and four assists for the Knicks, who were unable to avenge Sunday's embarrassing 114-73 loss to Boston at Madison Square Garden. The margin of defeat was the third largest in MSG history.
Beno Udrih's jumper staked New York its largest lead at 79-68 with 10:32 left before Boston used a game-changing 18-5 run to go in front.
Bradley's second triple of the surge gave Boston an 86-84 edge and Jordan Crawford found a cutting Vitor Faverani for an easy layup to cap the swing and make it 88-84 with 1:07 to play.
"We kind of got stagnant a little bit," Knicks head coach Mike Woodson said of his team's offense in the fourth.
Bargnani knocked down a jumper to whittle the gap to 88-86, but Jeff Green's driving layup at the other end sealed the outcome.
Green had the ball along the left wing, got the step on J.R. Smith with the left-handed dribble and powered past Smith and Amare Stoudemire at the rim for a 90-86 spread with 9.5 ticks remaining. Green was unable to complete the three-point play.
"We needed to have a lead, lose it, be backed up against the wall, and figure out a way to win," Boston head coach Brad Stevens said.
Tim Hardaway Jr. missed a triple for New York and Bradley secured the rebound for the victory.
Earlier, Lee drained a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to give Boston a 29-26 cushion and Sullinger put in seven points during a 14-0 swing early in the second frame, which helped the hosts open up a 45-28 lead.
Boston led 54-48 at the break.
Bargnani scored 10 points in the third and New York headed into the fourth with a 73-68 advantage.
