Final - OT
Turner's buzzer-beater lifts Sixers past Nets in OT
Dec 21, 2013 - 5:21 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Turner's runner as time expired hit every part of the rim before falling through as the Philadelphia 76ers snapped a seven-game losing streak and topped the Brooklyn Nets, 121-120, in overtime. The Sixers went in front 119-115 on a Thaddeus Young triple with 2:03 remaining in the extra session but went cold after that, missing four straight shots. Paul Pierce put the Nets on top by one with a deep trey with 16.9 seconds remaining, setting up Turner's heroics.
Turner had his initial attempt at the rim blocked by Alan Anderson with 6.9 ticks left, leading to a Philly inbounds under the basket. Out of a timeout, Turner received the ball, drove left and released a floater over two defenders as the clock hit zero.
"I was thinking, 'where did the ball go?'" said Turner. "I thought it came out the other side."
Turner netted a game-high 29 points with 10 rebounds and five assists for Philly, which has still not won in regulation since Nov. 8. The Sixers improved to 4-0 in overtime games since then.
"We needed to get that win for the sanity of our group," said Philadelphia head coach Brett Brown.
Young added 25 points while rookie Michael Carter-Williams, who had missed the previous 11 games with a knee infection, returned to the lineup and contributed 15 points and 10 assists in the triumph. Tony Wroten had 19 off the bench.
The Nets wing players took advantage of Joe Johnson's absence, as Anderson and Mirza Teletovic both scored season-highs while Pierce tallied 24 points and 10 boards. Anderson scored a 26 points while Teletovic drained six treys en route to 18.
Johnson missed the tilt due to personal reasons, but is expected to rejoin the Nets when they host Indiana on Monday. Kevin Garnett (rest) was also inactive.
"You gotta give Philly credit," said Brooklyn head coach Jason Kidd. "They played hard throughout the whole game."
Both teams held four-point advantages in the fourth quarter, but neither team managed to gain any real separation. Turner split a pair of free throws to knot it at 108-108 with 50 seconds remaining, and the score held through regulation.
Earlier, the Sixers jumped out to a 19-10 edge midway through the first quarter before Teletovic drained consecutive 3s and Pierce made a circus shot plus a foul to tie it at 19.
Turner was a perfect 7-of-7 in the first quarter, but Brooklyn led 31-29 after 12 minutes of play. Philly, however, came back and led 50-47 at intermission.
Brooklyn threatened to pull away late in the third after a Brook Lopez jumper made it 81-73, but the Sixers answered with a 7-0 run to close out the frame and set the stage for an exciting finish.
