Wizards down Pistons to sweep home-and-home
Dec 31, 2013 - 7:45 AM Auburn Hills, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - John Wall had 29 points, Trevor Ariza scored 15 with 11 rebounds and the Washington Wizards swept a home-and-home series against the Detroit Pistons with a 106-99 win on Monday.Washington won the opener 106-82 at home on Saturday to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.
Wall had nine of his points in a big fourth quarter when the Wizards outscored the Pistons 28-12.
Bradley Beal added 13 points as the Wizards won for the fifth time in six games. They snapped a four-game road losing streak in the series.
"Any given night any guy on this team can have a big game," said Wall. "Tonight was my night, but everyone hustled out there and this was a team effort."
Greg Monroe had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pistons, who have lost five of their last six overall and four in a row at home. Brandon Jennings added 15 points and 14 assists and rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a career-high 17 -- all in the first half.
Detroit was without guard Rodney Stuckey because of a sore shoulder.
"We've got to finish games and limit our turnovers in the fourth quarter," siad Caldwell-Pope. "We have to make stops on defense and get the baskets when they're there."
Still, the Pistons led by 12 near the end of the third quarter and 87-78 going into the fourth.
But Washington used a 14-0 run spanning the two quarters to take the lead. Martell Webster scored half of his 10 points during the surge, including a 3 that gave the Wizards an 89-87 lead.
It remained tight until late, when Beal hit a long jumper and Nene knocked down a mid-range shot for a five-point lead with 1:46 left. Jennings was called for palming the ball with 18 seconds left and the Pistons trailing by six, a costly turnover.
Caldwell-Pope's previous career high was 16 points against Minnesota on Dec. 10. He had 17 in the first half against the Wizards, shooting 7-of-9 overall and missing just one of his four 3-point attempts.
The Pistons trailed 33-32 going into the second quarter and were down four before a 21-6 run gave them the lead. Caldwell-Pope made two 3s and scored eight points during the surge, which made it 60-49 Detroit.
The lead reached as high as 12 and was 63-53 at halftime despite the Wizards shooting better than 51 percent.
