Final - OT
Bulls edge Lakers in OT
Jan 21, 2014 - 6:10 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Taj Gibson had less than a second to get a shot off and barely beat the overtime buzzer with a layup off an inbounds pass to give the Chicago Bulls a 102-100 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The back-and-forth battle at United Center featured 23 lead changes and 14 ties, the last coming when Nick Young drained a baseline jumper with 6.0 seconds left in OT to knot things at 100-100.
After D.J. Augustin's pass at the other end was knocked out of bounds by Ryan Kelly, the Bulls called timeout to draw up a play with 0.9 ticks to go.
"We have confidence in what (coach Tom Thibodeau) draws up in the huddle," Augustin said.
Mike Dunleavy inbounded the ball from underneath the basket, and Gibson boxed out Manny Harris in the lane to receive the bounce pass cleanly, then quickly went up with his left hand over Pau Gasol for the game-winner.
"I was looking at the backboard hoping it would go red before it left his hand," hopes Young.
With their eighth win in 10 games, the Bulls evened their record (20-20) for the first time since they were 7-7 on Nov. 27.
Augustin led Chicago with a season-high 27 points, while Joakim Noah filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 21 rebounds and six assists.
Young became the first Lakers to eclipse the 30-point mark this season, but his 31 weren't enough to earn Los Angeles a third straight win. Gasol finished with 20 points, 19 boards and five blocks in the setback.
Augustin's 3-pointer broke an 82-82 tie with 4 1/2 minutes left in regulation, and the Lakers retook the lead on three consecutive buckets by Gasol, the last an easy basket in the paint that put LA in front, 90-87, with 2:12 remaining.
Augustin answered with another triple, and Jimmy Butler put the Bulls ahead with a reverse layup off a nifty backdoor bounce pass by Noah, who had a chance to seal the win at the foul line with 7.4 seconds on the clock.
Noah, though, went 1-of-2 at the line, then fouled Young well beyond the 3- point line in the act of shooting. Young made all three freebies, and Noah missed the rim entirely on a contested left-handed layup at the buzzer.
The Lakers scored the first five points of overtime, and the Bulls answered with the next seven, including Augustin's go-ahead layup with 1:30 to play.
Two empty possessions from both sides preceded Young's tying bucket.
There were 10 lead changes and four ties in a see-saw first half, which ended with the Lakers holding a 52-49 lead.
The third quarter played out just the same, with buckets from Young and Jordan Hill in the final minute giving LA a 72-69 edge going into the final stanza.
