Patterson's late jumper lifts Raptors over Nets
Jan 28, 2014 - 6:29 AMVideo
With Brooklyn holding a one-point lead with 12 seconds to play, Williams lobbed an inbounds pass into the backcourt that Patterson intercepted before dishing to Kyle Lowry.
"It's not my first time turning the ball over to lose a game, probably won't be my last," Williams said of the miscue.
Lowry was double-teamed near the top of the key, forcing him to pass back to Patterson, who waited for Williams to fly by before draining the short jumper to put Toronto on top.
"It was just the safest pass for me and I have confidence in Pat (Patterson)," Lowry said of his decision to go to Patterson. "I got confidence in him that he's going to make that shot every time."
Paul Pierce's contested 3-pointer from the right wing found the front of the rim as time expired and the Raptors escaped with the victory.
Lowry finished with 31 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals, while Jonas Valanciunas scored 20 points and grabbed 13 boards for the Raptors, who have won three of their last four to extend their lead over Brooklyn atop the Atlantic Division to 2 1/2 games.
Pierce knocked down seven triples en route to a season-high 33 points, while Andray Blatche added 20 points off the bench for Brooklyn, which had a five- game win streak halted and dropped to 10-2 in 2014, with both losses coming against Toronto.
Brooklyn trailed 94-85 with just over eight minutes to play, but Pierce poured in a trio of triples during a 15-2 Brooklyn burst that gave the home team a four-point lead with 2:32 to play.
Valanciunas answered with a dunk and after Pierce split a pair of free throws, Greivis Vasquez finished a layup to get the Raptors within one with 1:15 left.
After the teams exchanged empty possessions, Pierce knocked down two from the stripe to make it 103-100 with 17.4 ticks remaining, but John Salmons finished a finger roll layup to trim the margin to one with 12 seconds on the clock.
Early on, Lowry led all scorers with 20 points in a tightly contested first half that featured 10 lead changes, with the final one coming on Lowry's heave from beyond halfcourt that beat the halftime buzzer and sent Toronto into the break clinging to a 57-56 edge.
Neither team was able to create much separation in the third and Toronto took an 82-81 lead into the fourth.
