Williams, Jazz upset Heat
Feb 9, 2014 - 7:57 AM Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Burke hit the game-sealing jumper and Marvin Williams scored 23 points to help the Utah Jazz upset the Miami Heat, 94-89, Saturday night.Richard Jefferson scored 14, Burke 13 and Alec Burks 12 for Utah, which snapped a four-game skid.
The Heat, who lost their third in a row in Salt Lake City, got 19 points from Dwyane Wade. LeBron James and Chris Bosh each had 13 points and seven rebounds, but Miami had its three-game winning streak broken and lost for just the second time in eight contests.
The Heat and Jazz entered the contest basically with opposite records, but Utah was able to get its 17th victory of the season thanks to some clutch shooting.
Ray Allen made a 3-pointer from the left corner to get the visitors within 91-89 with under a minute left.
Burke, though, hit a jumper from the left wing with 24.2 seconds left.
Allen then missed a shot from nearly the same spot as his last attempt. Bosh got the offensive rebound, but Wade's driving layup attempt was thwarted by good defense near the rim.
Gordon Hayward made one free throw to cement the outcome.
"It was good defense by us. We forced them into indecisions," Hayward said. That's what's frustrating. We see we can do this, but we need to do this every night."
Burke was able to calmly hit his clutch shot possibly because of the help of Allen. Before the game, Allen spoke to Burke about getting in a routine.
"He was basically just talking to me about getting a routine early on in your career. Taking care of your body and the proper amount of rest, all the little things that veterans do that rookies should do. I took a lot away from it," Burke said. "I talked to him for about 20 minutes and it was a great conversation. I grew up watching him play, watching him in movies and stuff like that. It was a great experience getting to talk to him and it was an even better win."
Williams scored 12 points in the first quarter to help the Jazz take a 32-20 lead after 12 minutes. Utah shot 13-of-21 from the field in the period.
The Heat used a 13-3 spurt in the second to grab a 48-47 edge following a Mario Chalmers 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining. Williams, though, hit a 3-ball in the closing seconds for a 52-50 edge for the hosts at the break.
"We played well enough defensively, but offensively we didn't shoot the ball as well as we're capable of doing," James said. "It was offensively one of those games where we were out of rhythm and we tried to win defensively."
Miami struggled by shooting 5-of-14 in the third quarter, but managed to go into the fourth trailing by only a 68-66 difference.
The Heat trailed by as many as eight in the final period.
