Nets bounce back, blow out Nuggets
Feb 28, 2014 - 7:56 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Pierce netted 18 points and the Brooklyn Nets got back on track with a 112-89 drubbing of the ailing Denver Nuggets on Thursday from Pepsi Center.Brooklyn led wire-to-wire in this one after losing by 44 points to Portland on Wednesday. Joe Johnson, Mason Plumlee and Marcus Thornton all scored 10 points, with Shaun Livingston handing out a game-high eight assists.
"Right from the tip, guys came with the energy," Brooklyn head coach Jason Kidd said. "Defensively we got stops and from there we started making shots."
All 13 players that took the court for the Nets notched at least three points, including recent signee Jason Collins, who made his only field goal.
Randy Foye notched 15 points while Kenneth Faried and J.J. Hickson each tallied 14 as Denver's forgettable month comes to an end. The Nuggets have lost three straight, eight of nine and finished February with a 3-8 mark.
Denver struggled out of the gate and never really recovered. The hosts shot just 3-of-18 from the field in the first quarter while Brooklyn shot better than 50 percent.
Pierce hit a pair of jumpers to get things started. Later in the period, Andray Blatche's putback layup sparked an 11-0 Brooklyn surge. When the dust settled, the Nets owned a commanding 29-8 lead.
It was Denver's worst scoring quarter of the season.
The margin reached 31 points on a Mirza Teletovic triple midway through the second. Denver managed to cut its deficit to 23 points, 59-36, at halftime, but failed to regroup during the break.
"I've never seen anything like it," Denver head coach Brian Shaw said of his team's struggles in the first half. "I think our guys just seemed uptight."
Brooklyn quickly rebuilt a 31-point lead when Deron Williams hit jumpers on the front and back end of a 6-0 flurry five minutes into the third. Blatche and Teletovic hit back-to-back treys later in the period as the lead reached 85-47.
