Zach Randolph finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Miller added 10 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who improved to 5-2 since the All-Star break.
John Wall poured in a game-high 23 points and handed out nine assists, Bradley Beal scored 21 points and Marcin Gortat added 16 for the Wizards, who had a six-game winning streak snapped.
Washington was trying to win seven in a row for the first time since Jan. 2-15, 2005.
Trevor Booker and Trevor Ariza both finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
"We knew they were a big offensive team in the paint that wanted to get it to Gasol and those guys, but we basically let everyone get into the paint," said Wall, whose team was outscored in the paint by a wide 62-34 margin.
The Grizzlies led 90-71 following Nick Calathes' layup at the 7:53 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Wizards stormed back to pull within four, 102-98, with 1:17 left.
Ariza nailed a 3-pointer to make it 99-87 and a pair of Wall free throws had the hosts within 10.
Wall then nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, around a Miller trey, before Otto Porter canned one from the left wing to make it 102-98.
Prince answered with a jumper just inside the 3-point line to make it a two- possession game. Wall was fouled on the ensuing trip down the floor, but split his free throws.
After Gasol misfired on a pair from the charity stripe, Wall got a tough finger roll to fall with 21 ticks showing to make it 104-101. The Wizards immediately fouled Conley on the inbounds pass, and he sunk both free ones, but Beal knocked down a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to make it 106-104.
The Grizzlies went 4-for-4 from the line in the closing seconds to seal the win.
The teams were tied at 20-20 after 12 minutes, but the Grizzlies owned a 50-45 lead at the break. Memphis outscored the Wizards 29-19 in the third to take a 79-64 lead into the final frame.
"We're more concerned with not letting teams get up early on us," Prince said. "We're coming on the road like, 'Let's get in it early and make it happen.'"
