Andre Drummond scored 17 points and grabbed a career-high 26 rebounds while playing 46-plus minutes for the Pistons, who snapped their own four-game slide despite falling behind by 14 early on.
Will Bynum scored all 16 of his points in the fourth quarter, Rodney Stuckey also netted 16 and Josh Smith added 15 for the victors.
"It was a total team effort," Pistons head coach John Loyer said. "They were a pleasure to coach tonight."
Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire paced the Knicks with 28 and 22 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough to halt New York's latest collapse.
It was all downhill for the Knicks after a Stoudemire dunk had them in front by a wide 25-11 margin just 10:05 into the game.
The Pistons began their comeback by ending the first quarter on a 9-3 run, then went into the intermission trailing by a manageable 44-39 count.
Smith's jumper 2:03 into the third quarter gave Detroit its first lead, 47-45, and the hosts went into the fourth holding a 69-64 advantage.
"We went kind of flat in that third quarter," said Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, whose team was outscored 30-20 in the frame.
The Pistons pulled away thanks in large part to Bynum and by holding New York without a point for the first five minutes of the period.
A Bynum layup with 7:17 remaining stretched Detroit's lead to 77-64, and the closest the Knicks got from there was nine.
