Davis' career night leads Pelicans by Lakers
Nov 9, 2013 - 5:38 AM New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Davis scored a career-high 32 points and the New Orleans Pelicans stopped an 11-game regular season losing streak to the Los Angeles Lakers with a 96-85 win on Friday night.Davis scored seven points during a 12-0 run late in the first quarter that cemented New Orleans' first win over the Lakers since March 29, 2010.
The former No. 1 pick had 12 rebounds and tied a career-high with six blocks as the Pelicans won their second game in a row for the first time this season.
Eric Gordon chipped in 16 points, Jason Smith scored 14 and Jrue Holiday had 13 points and 13 assists.
Holiday's last assist came after a steal and an outlet pass behind the Lakers defense that Davis threw down for a dunk to highlight the Pelicans' fourth- quarter run, which turned a tight score into a 15-point gap with 36.4 seconds left.
Chris Kaman had 16 points to lead the Lakers, who were coming off Thursday's win over Houston on Steve Blake's go-ahead 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Los Angeles went 1-2 on a three-game road trip and hasn't won consecutive games this season.
"I thought we came out and we weren't ready to play," Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We didn't play with intensity. We needed everybody to be present and they weren't."
The teams play again in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Pelicans coach Monty Williams said his team struggled offensively in the third quarter, scoring just 14 points.
"We didn't score much but we didn't give up much," said Williams. "If you're going to score 14 points in a quarter you better have an 18-point defensive effort to keep your spirits up."
That's exactly what happened.
"We had guys make defensive plays," said Williams.
Davis was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-of-6 at the line for 13 points in the first quarter and pulled down eight rebounds but the Lakers kept it close, outscoring the Pelicans 8-3 over the last four minutes to get within 28-27 going into the second.
New Orleans built a 55-48 lead at halftime behind 50 percent shooting and led 69-66 going into the fourth quarter.
