Bibby scores season high as Kings edge Grizzlies

Nov 16, 2006 - 5:33 AM SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Mike Bibby and the Sacramento Kings survived their first tough test at Arco Arena.

Bibby scored a season-high 32 points and handed out 10 assists and Kevin Martin added 24 as the Kings posted their 18th straight home win over the Memphis Grizzlies, a 115-111 victory.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Ron Artest contributed 19 points despite a battlling back spasms for the Kings, who handed the Grizzlies their fifth loss in a row.

Sacramento won its first three home games of the season by double digits before encountering a close call with a desperate Memphis club.

"They made us work," Abdur-Rahim said. "They were a really hungry team."

The Kings clinged to just a two-point lead with less than three minutes remaining before Bibby drained a 3-pointer for a 106-101 edge. Nearly two minutes later, a 3-pointer by Martin extended the margin to 109-104.

"I'm glad we won, we kind of slacked off a bit," Bibby said. "We let them hit a couple of shots, then Kev (Martin) hit a couple of big shots, Shareef hit a couple of big shots and we won."

Bibby and Martin combined to make six free throws in the closing moments, sealing Sacramento's fourth straight win.

Chucky Atkins, who made 10-of-11 shots, netted 27 points and Damon Stoudamire added 19 for the Grizzlies, who shot 53 percent (39-of-74) overall.

"I thought we played well," Stoudamire said. "Overall I thought it was a step forward for us. We had our chances but they hit shots. Getting back on the floor will be good. I think we took steps forward."

After the Kings had their nine-point fourth-quarter lead erased, Martin drilled a 3-pointer to give them the lead for good at 101-99 with 4:48 left.

"I told them to play hard, that we weren't playing hard," said Bibby about the Grizzlies' late 10-0 spurt. "Then we got a couple of stops, two or three in a row, and we scored two, so that put us back on top."
