Maxiell, Pistons' reserves hold off Nuggets

Oct 18, 2007 - 1:37 AM GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Reserve Jason Maxiell scored 25 points and hauled in 12 rebounds as the Detroit Pistons posted a 119-110 preseason victory over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

Ronald Murray scored 19 points and rookie Arron Afflalo added 14 off the bench for Detroit, which played without backcourt stars Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton.

The Pistons also won this game without significant contributions from the starting front line of Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Tayshaun Prince, who all played in the first quarter before joining coach Flip Saunders on the bench for the rest of the game.

Maxiell, who entered the contest late in the opening period, shot 11-of-15 from the field and helped around the paint, corralling six offensive boards for Detroit, which outrebounded Denver, 55-37.

It was the third double-double for Maxiell in the preseason.

Murray scored 14 of his points in the second half for the Pistons, who shot 48 percent (47-of-98).

J.R. Smith netted 32 points and Bobby Jones added 26 for the Nuggets, who were without All-Stars Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, both of whom did not suit up after playing on Tuesday.

Eduardo Najera had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Denver, which shot 53 percent (42-of-80).
