Lowry notches triple-double as Grizzlies fend off Rockets

Oct 24, 2007 - 3:46 AM HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Kyle Lowry recorded a triple-double - collecting 21 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds - as the Memphis Grizzlies posted a 109-107 double-overtime preseason victory over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday.

Rudy Gay scored 18 points and Stromile Swift had 16 for the Grizzlies, who played without star center Pau Gasol. The former All-Star center sat out with a left ankle sprain.

Lowry badly outplayed his competition for the point guard spot, first-round pick Mike Conley Jr. Conley scored just four points and had two assists, logging just 14 minutes because of foul trouble.

Meanwhile, Gay continued his solid preseason and seems poised for a breakout year. The eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft, Gay was 7-of-12 from the field and added four steals - giving the Rockets a glimpse of what could have been.

Houston traded Gay's draft rights, along with Swift, to Memphis for Shane Battier. The 6-9 Gay was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in Saturday's win over Miami, including five 3-pointers.

Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady scored 10 points apiece for the Rockets, while Battier scored just two points on 1-of-8 shooting.

Mike James netted 19 points and Steve Francis added 13 for Houston, which shot 43 percent (40-of-92) from the floor.
