Davis leads Timberwolves past struggling SuperSonics
Dec 30, 2006 - 8:29 AM MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis made up for Kevin Garnett's poor shooting performance.Davis scored 24 points and Mark Blount added 18 to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 101-82 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
The Timberwolves used a 9-0 run bridging the second and third quarters that was capped by Mike James' jumper at the 10:46 mark, increasing their lead to 60-39. Minnesota shot 50 percent (41-of-82) from the floor despite Garnett shooting just 4-of-15 and finishing with 10 points.
"We never let up," Garnett said. "I said today at shootaround that we needed to come out and set the tone. Mark Blount, who has really good rhythm as of late, and Ricky Davis came out aggressive. It was a good win for us."
Garnett did collect 13 rebounds and rookie Randy Foye scored 12 points for the Timberwolves, who had six players in double-figures.
"It's always good to get a win like this after a loss, and we got everyone involved tonight," Foye said.
"We kept our focus for 48 minutes and kept our foot down on the pedal to keep it going," Timberwolves coach Dwayne Casey said. "This should hopefully give us momentum."
Despite his poor shooting performance, the 6-11 Garnett extended his double-digit scoring streak to 349 games.
"I am not necessarily trying to get stats," Garnett said. "My thing is rebounding and blocked shots. I love to pass the ball, but rebounds are what I want to be known for, and tonight I was in the zone."
Ray Allen returned to Seattle's lineup after missing one game for the birth of his second child and scored 14 points despite 4-of-16 shooting.
"I know the heart of the guys on this team, so I know guys don't have selfish characters, but a trend developed tonight that I saw that a certain type of effort wasn't being put forth out there tonight," Allen said. "We can't win games when guys try to think that they're going to do it all by themselves."
Johan Petro scored 12 points for the Sonics, who were outrebounded, 56-38. Seattle has lost all eight of its road games in the month of December.
"It was one of those nights," Sonics coach Bob Hill said. "We were very, very tired. I thought they started out well and the effort was good. The ball hit front rim the whole first quarter. We couldn't make a shot. We dug ourselves a hole and that was pretty much it."
