Martin leads Kings to rout of Warriors

Dec 31, 2006 - 7:27 AM SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Kevin Martin and the Sacramento Kings took care of the Golden State Warriors and they did not waste any time in doing so.

Martin scored 25 points and the Kings used an early run to down the Warriors, 116-96, in easy fashion.

Sacramento trailed, 22-16, late in the first quarter, but embarked on a 23-3 tear that carried over to the second quarter and gave the Kings a 39-25 lead midway through the second period.

"We went into a 2-3 zone and wanted to get to the outside shooters, which we did," Martin said. "The guys on the bench tonight came in and gave a great effort. We started playing together and we got a lead."

"We played against zones so many times, but tonight our shots weren't falling and we weren't playing any defense," Golden State's Matt Barnes said. "That's a recipe for disaster."

Mike Bibby and Quincy Douby each scored 21 points for the Kings, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) from the floor.

"The Warriors are a really great team, they beat us at their place twice pretty bad," Douby said. "I haven't been playing that great but Coach gave me an opportunity. I was just feeling comfortable, letting the game come to me. Shots were falling for me and I was feeling real confident out there. I'm just really excited."

"The vets are always good with the rookies, they just help them every day in practice," Martin said. "It showed tonight. (Douby) went out there and played his game. It definitely doesn't hurt his confidence, that's for sure."

Barnes and Keith McLeod each scored 17 for the Warriors, who only connected on 37 percent (34-of-92) from the field.

"They just got hot," McLeod said. "We didn't get stops when we needed to get stops, and they didn't miss shots. From there on it was an uphill battle and it was tough. They kept the pressure on."

Golden State, which fell to 4-2 in its last six games, got bad news when guard-forward Jason Richardson suffered a fractured bone in his right hand and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

"That always hurts," McLeod said. "Jason's a great guy and brings a lot to this team. It's unfortunate that happened. I just pray for Jason and wish him the best. We'll see what happens."
