Mavericks look for 10th straight win, set coaching milestone

Dec 31, 2006 - 4:52 PM Dallas (23-7) at Denver (16-11) 9:00 pm EST

DENVER (Ticker) -- Dallas coach Avery Johnson looks to become the fastest coach to reach 100 career wins when the Dallas Mavericks travel to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Dallas can also extend its winning streak to 10 games with a victory. The Mavericks continued their winning ways Saturday, posting a 94-80 win over the New Orleans Hornets.

Jason Terry scored 25 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 17 for Dallas, which improved to 14-3 at home and 6-2 against Southwest Division opponents.

In his second full season as coach, Johnson has a 99-31 record with the Mavericks after guiding them to the NBA Finals last season. With a win, he will pass the late Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach, who was the quickest to reach 100 coaching victories, needing just 135 games.

The Nuggets will try to rebound from a 99-89 loss to the Hornets on Friday. Earl Boykins led Denver with 26 points while newly-acquired Allen Iverson finished with 21.

The Nuggets, who dropped to 2-2 since trading for Iverson, shot only 37 percent (33-of-89) from the floor and managed just 30 points in the entire second half.
