Smith returns from suspension as Nuggets face Spurs

Jan 10, 2007 - 4:14 PM San Antonio (25-11) at Denver (17-15) 9:00 pm EST

DENVER (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson finally will get some help on the court.

J.R. Smith returns from a 10-game suspension Wednesday and hopes to take some pressure off Iverson when the Denver Nuggets host the San Antonio Spurs.

The Nuggets are just 3-6 since acquiring Iverson in a trade with Philadelphia on December 19.

However, Denver has been shorthanded during that time due to suspensions levied on superstar forward Carmelo Anthony and Smith for their roles in a brawl at New York on December 16.

Iverson, who has looked tentative with his new team, is averaging 26.0 points per game but 5.3 turnovers since being traded to Denver. He continues to be hampered by a sprained right toe.

On Wednesday, however, Smith will return from his suspension and add some much-needed firepower. In his first season with the Nuggets, Smith was averaging 16.7 points per game in 22 contests before the suspension.

Earl Boykins had 26 points and 11 assists and Iverson added 23 points as the Nuggets snapped a five-game losing streak with a 104-92 victory over struggling Milwaukee on Monday.

San Antonio has won two in a row after a season-high three-game losing streak.

Tim Duncan collected 16 points and nine rebounds to lead four starters in double figures as the Spurs cruised to a 98-84 triumph over the struggling Trail Blazers.

The teams split their four meetings last season.
