Jamison, Arenas carry Wizards past Pistons

Jan 27, 2007 - 3:02 AM AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Antawn Jamison and All-Star Gilbert Arenas finally got the Washington Wizards over the hump.

Jamison scored 35 points and Arenas chipped in 25 and 10 assists as the Wizards held on for a 99-96 triumph over the Detroit Pistons.

Washington stumbled in both matchups earlier this campaign against Detroit, including a 100-91 setback here on November 17. The Wizards swept the season series a year ago.

In the fourth quarter, Richard Hamilton's floater helped the Piston break a 92-92 tie with 1:05 remaining. But on the next possession, Jamison hit a wide-open 3-pointer from the left corner as the Wizards took a one-point advantage.

After Detroit's Rasheed Wallace missed a shot from the arc, Caron Butler sank a pair of foul shots as Washington extended its lead to 99-96 with five seconds to go.

The Pistons had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Wallace misfired once again from 3-point range as time expired, ending their three-game winning streak.

Hamilton scored 27 points and Chauncey Billups added 17 and nine assists for Detroit, which shot 46 percent (37-of-80) from the field.

Billups and Wallace combined to score 10 consecutive points for Detroit, which tied it at 87-87 with 3:16 remaining.

In the third quarter, Butler drained a fadeaway jumper in the lane at the buzzer, giving the Wizards a 72-64 advantage heading into the final period.
