Johnson, Hawks crush Warriors

Feb 1, 2007 - 4:32 AM ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Joe Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks might have found their stride.

Johnson had 33 points and seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures as the Hawks rolled to a 115-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Josh Childress had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Marvin Williams netted 17 for Atlanta, which has won four of five games.

The Hawks finished 8-7 in January - their first winning month since April 2004 - for the first time under coach Mike Woodson.

"That's big. It hasn't happened since 2004," Johnson said. "For us to focus in this month and have a winning month, hopefully, it can carry over to (February). We just need to keep the swagger."

Johnson registered his third 30-point performance in four games and 14th of the season. Atlanta improved to 9-5 when he scores at least 30 points.

"Joe was phenomenal. He's been that way all year," Woodson said. "I just hope when the time comes to announce the All-Star team (on Thursday), they choose him. He's been very, very good for this ball club."

"He definitely should be on (the All-Star team)," Childress said of his teammate. "It's up to the coaches to decide. He's shown he's an elite player in the league and he should be an All-Star."

Johnson and Childress combined to pour in 22 points during a 40-point second quarter, helping Atlanta hold a 70-56 bulge at intermission.

"It seemed like everything they did wrong, we capitalized," Childress said. "We made the layups, we played the break and we got jump shots."

It was Atlanta's highest point total for the first half this season, surpassing its previous best of 61 points at Portland on December 3.

The Hawks shot an impressive 59 percent (13-of-22) from the field in the period and were never challenged over the final two quarters.

"They just attacked our goal," Golden State coach Don Nelson said. "They played a terrific game. They just outplayed us, made their shots, and that's about all. They made every shot and it was a great performance by them."

Former Hawk Al Harrington scored 21 points and Baron Davis chipped in 17 and 12 assists for the Warriors, who shot 43 percent (32-of-73) and made just 1-of-15 from 3-point range.

"We played hard, but we didn't play hard enough," Harrington said. "We were never able to get it right out there. They pretty much cruised the whole game."

"We just keep playing poorly," Davis said. "That's pretty much it. We're not playing good. In order to win on the road, you have to play with a sense of urgency, and we didn't do that."
