Lewis shoots SuperSonics past Trail Blazers

Feb 27, 2007 - 7:51 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Rashard Lewis played one of his best games of the season as the Seattle SuperSonics rebounded from one of their worst.

Lewis scored 29 points and the SuperSonics avenged an Opening Night setback with a 97-73 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Sonics were coming off a 102-71 loss to San Antonio on Saturday, their largest margin of defeat this season. Seattle trailed by as many as 36 as it set a season-low for points in a game.

Lewis had only 10 points against the Spurs but had eight in a 21-8 run in the third quarter that gave the Sonics a 64-43 lead.

"That was one of the better defensive performances we've had in a long time," Sonics coach Bob Hill said. "I was really pleased with the defensive effort. Very good performance, particularly after coming off the game in San Antonio."

Lewis made 6-of-11 from the arc and added seven rebounds. Ray Allen had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Seattle, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

"I think people think we think about what happened in the last game, but it's a new game and a new opportunity and a new day," Allen said. "So you just go out there and get excited about it. We don't bring the past with us. But we can hopefully repay the favor to somebody else. We were convincing tonight in the win and that is good for us."

Travis Outlaw scored 14 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 12 and Zach Randolph added 11 for Portland, which never led and made only two of its first 15 shots.

"I just thought that this was one of the worst games we've played all season long," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "The sense of urgency was not there. It was just not the effort that you should bring to the floor and expect to win a ballgame."

Rookie of the Year candidate Brandon Roy, a former University of Washington star, scored 20 points in the first meeting with the Sonics but managed just six points on 3-of-13 shooting in his return to Key Arena.

"We did a good job of paying attention to the game plan and keeping Randolph from getting too hot and Roy from doing what he wanted on pick-and-rolls," Allen said.

"We just didn't make any shots," Roy said. "Usually you have a bad quarter shooting the ball, we had a bad game."
