Mavericks look for franchise-best winning streak vs. Magic

Mar 3, 2007 - 5:49 PM Orlando (28-32) at Dallas (49-9) 9:00 pm EST

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks conquered "The King" in their last contest. Now, they look to enter uncharted territory against one of the NBA's young princes.

Having tied a franchise record with a 14-game winning streak, the red-hot Mavericks hope to stay on a roll against Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic on Saturday.

League-leading Dallas (49-9) tied its longest winning streak in franchise history, previously set by the 2002-03 squad that started 14-0, with a 95-92 victory over superstar LeBron James and Cleveland on Thursday. The Mavericks survived James' two potential game-tying 3-pointers on the contest's final possession.

But Dallas rode its own star, Dirk Nowitzki, who had 24 points and 11 rebounds after being named Western Conference Player of the Month earlier on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Mavericks became the only team in NBA history to record three winning streaks of at least 12 games. They won 13 in a row from December 13-January 5 and reeled off a 12-game run after starting the season 0-4.

Dallas will look to set a new mark when they take on Orlando, which has lost six of its last seven games, including a 98-74 loss to San Antonio on Friday.

The Magic are led by one of the NBA's most promising young stars, Dwight Howard, who had his streak of 13 straight games scoring in double figures and another of eight straight double-doubles snapped against the Spurs. Howard had just nine points and nine rebounds.
