Wizards look to regain top spot in Southeast

Apr 1, 2007 - 1:42 PM Washington (38-33) at Milwaukee (25-46) 3:30 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards fell out of first place in the Southeast Division in heartbreaking fashion.

The Wizards can move back on top with a win over the Milwaukee Bucks coupled with a loss by the Miami Heat (39-33) at Detroit.

On Friday, Washington fell one-half game behind Miami in the division race with a 123-118 overtime loss to Toronto.

The Wizards held a three-point lead late in regulation when Raptors swingman Anthony Parker threw a 70-foot in-bounds pass which was intercepted by Trevor Ruffin, who tossed it in the air in an attempt to run out the clock. However, the ball went directly to Toronto's Morris Peterson, who hit a 3-pointer from behind the arc as time expired.

But Arenas had a chance to save the Wizards in overtime. But on the game's final possession, he missed a 3-pointer and had a layup attempt blocked as time ran out. The All-Star guard scored 34 points on just 9-of-29 shooting.

The Bucks have lost five straight contests, including a 97-81 defeat to Charlotte on Friday. Center Andrew Bogut (foot), forward Charlie Villanueva (shoulder) and forward Bobby Simmons (foot) have been shut down for the remainder of the campaign.

The Bucks have lost two of three games against the Wizards this season. Caron Butler is averaging 24.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists for Washington in those contests.
