Injury-riddled Hornets look to stay in playoff race vs. Suns

Apr 6, 2007 - 5:30 PM Phoenix (56-19) at New Orleans (35-40) 8:00 pm EDT

OKLAHOMA CITY (Ticker) -- The injury-riddled New Orleans Hornets look to stay in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference when they take on the Phoenix Suns on Friday.

In Wednesday's 101-92 overtime victory over Seattle, the Hornets suffered injuries to three starters, including star guard Chris Paul (ankle), forward Tyson Chandler (toe) and swingman Desmond Mason (nose, cheek bone).

Paul and Chandler are day-to-day, but Mason's injury was revealed as more serious. After taking an elbow to the eye from SuperSonics forward Chris Wilcox, Mason found out he broke his nose and cheek bone.

The injuries could not have come at worse time for the Hornets, who are one game behind Golden State (36-39) and 2 1/2 games back of the Los Angeles Clippers (37-37) for the final postseason berth.

The Suns suffered a 92-85 loss at San Antonio on Thursday. Steve Nash had 20 points and seven assists for the Suns, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

With the loss, Phoenix is just two games ahead of San Antonio (54-21) for the second seed in the West.
