Holiday, Sixers take down Hornets

Jan 5, 2012 - 5:26 AM New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Jrue Holiday scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Philadelphia 76ers overcame a double-digit first-half deficit to take down the New Orleans Hornets, 101-93.

Evan Turner added 21 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench for the 76ers, who went 3-2 on their five-game road trip to start the season.

"When you looked at the fourth quarter we had nine points off turnovers, we had four for the game. We had eight fast break points, we had five in that quarter. If you look at the hustle points, we were minus 22 in the first half and we finished the second half plus two. So our energy level picked up, we had some guys come off the bench and do a great job," 76ers head coach Doug Collins said.

Philadelphia will now play 18 of its next 22 at the Wells Fargo Center, with its home opener scheduled for Friday against Detroit.

Eric Gordon -- who has missed the last four games due to a bruised knee -- netted 22 points, Carl Landry had 21 points and eight rebounds, and Jarrett Jack finished with 19 points and 11 assists for New Orleans, which has lost four in a row since winning its first two games of the season.

"It is disappointing because we were playing well in the first three quarters, and we had too many lapses on defense," Gordon said of the fourth quarter. "They did hit some tough shots, but you don't want them to happen being on the run, and there were points during the game where we weren't scoring offensively, so that's a bad combination."

With the game tied, 83-83, with 5:43 remaining in regulation, Holiday capped a 6-0 burst with a three-pointer from the left corner to make it an 89-83 game.

Jack scored the next four for the Hornets to pull them within two, 89-87, with 2:59 to go. But Holiday nailed another three-pointer, followed by a floater in the lane to put Philadelphia back up by seven.

"Jrue (Holiday) was magnificent coming down the stretch, hit some huge shots for us," Collins said.

Landry made a layup on the other end, but Andre Igoudala -- who had just three points on 1-of-9 shooting up to this point -- emphatically put an exclamation point on the proceedings.

Spencer Hawes clanked a jumper from the left elbow, but Igoudala reached back with his left hand and powerfully slammed the put back home for a 96-89 lead with 1 1/2 minutes left.

Gordon paced the Hornets with 11 first-quarter points as they led 27-16 after the opening quarter.

Jason Smith's three-pointer gave New Orleans its largest lead, 34-20, but the 76ers clawed back to make it a 47-40 game at halftime.

Hawes netted 11 third-quarter points as the 76ers trailed, 73-67, heading into the final stanza.
