Davis helps Magic down Kings
Jan 9, 2012 - 6:12 AM Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - With Dwight Howard plagued by foul trouble for the majority of the contest, reserve Glen Davis stepped up and recorded 20 points and eight rebounds as the Orlando Magic took down the Sacramento Kings, 104-97.Howard -- who posted eight consecutive double-doubles against the Kings coming in -- totaled less than 20 minutes and scored all five of his points in the fourth quarter.
"It's frustrating to get in foul trouble and (you) can't really play the way you want to play, but I was happy for the other guys" Howard said.
Jason Richardson netted a season-high 22 points and Ryan Anderson added a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who were coming off a 97-83 loss to Chicago on Friday.
Tyreke Evans poured in 28 points and dished out eight assists while DeMarcus Cousins posted 16 points and 10 rebounds for Sacramento, which connected on just 3-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc and turned the ball over 18 times.
"I think our guys did a good job, they're on the right track," Sacramento interim head coach Keith Smart.
With the shot clock running down and the Magic holding a slim one-point margin, Hedo Turkoglu banked in an off-balance, step back three-pointer from the right wing to give Orlando a 93-89 lead with just over three minutes to play in the fourth.
After a pair of Howard free throws, Evans converted a three-point play to make it a 95-92 game. But a layup by Jameer Nelson and Anderson's backbreaking three-pointer from the left corner increased Orlando's lead to 100-92 with 1:30 remaining.
Marcus Thornton knocked down a trey on the other end to cut the margin to five, but it was as close as Sacramento got the rest of the way.
Howard picked up two quick fouls 1:46 into the contest and without the star center on the floor, Cousins scored 10 of Sacramento's first 11 points. The Kings used a 12-2 run to take a 17-8 advantage midway through the quarter and led 21-19 after the opening stanza.
Howard played just six minutes in the opening half and did not attempt a field goal or free throw. The Magic, though, led 49-47 heading into the break as Davis recorded 11 points and six rebounds.
Anderson and Davis combined for 20 of Orlando's 32 points in the third as the Magic took an 81-79 lead into the fourth.
