Jazz hope to stay perfect at home vs. Cavs

Jan 10, 2012 - 3:54 PM (Sports Network) - Coming off their first road win of the season, the Utah Jazz aim to remain perfect at home when they host a much-improved Cleveland team that's in the midst of a grueling seven-game road trip.

The Jazz won their fourth straight overall and their first road encounter this season in Oakland on Sunday when Gordon Hayward hit the deciding free throw in the closing seconds, giving Utah a hard-fought 88-87 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Monta Ellis scored 32 points to lead Golden State, but his turnover down the stretch led to Hayward getting fouled in transition with 11 seconds remaining. Hayward made 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Warriors one last chance.

Ellis dribbled down the clock at the other end but was unable to get by the staunch defense of Raja Bell and settled for a fallaway jumper from the right baseline that hit the iron as the final buzzer sounded, sealing Golden State's fifth straight setback.

Hayward finished with 18 points and Al Jefferson added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Jazz. Derrick Favors totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds in a winning cause.

Utah, which is 4-0 in Salt Lake City, will be shooting for its best home start since beginning the 2008-09 campaign 6-0.

The Cavs, meanwhile, fell to 1-2 on their tough trek in Portland on Monday when LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points, grabbed eight rebounds and came up with four steals, leading the Trail Blazers to a 98-78 victory over turnover- prone Cleveland.

Star rookie Kyrie Irving had a career-high 21 points to pace the Cavs, while Antawn Jamison pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, but shot just 1-for-8 from the field for three points.

"We have to limit our mistakes. It was a tough game," Irving said after his team committed a season-high 24 turnovers.

After tonight Cleveland will visit Phoenix, the LA Lakers and Charlotte to finish up its trip.

Utah has won three straight over the Cavs after dropping the previous four in the series. Cleveland is just 4-17 in its last 21 contests at the Jazz.
