Irving leads Cavs past Suns
Jan 13, 2012 - 9:02 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 26 points and Antawn Jamison added 23, as the Cavaliers bested the Suns, 101-90, on Thursday.Daniel Gibson chipped in 10 points and Anderson Varejao had eight points and 17 rebounds for the Cavs, who are in the midst of a seven-game road trip.
The Suns, meanwhile, saw their three-game home win streak come to an end. Steve Nash had 16 points and 15 assists and Marcin Gortat posted a double- double of 14 points and 10 boards in the team's second straight loss.
Michael Redd scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a 3-of-7 effort from beyond the arc, in his Suns debut.
"For me this is the preseason," Redd said. "This is all fresh for me. I just have to continue working hard to get better."
Irving continues to impress. He has scored 20-plus points in three straight games and guided the Cavs to a 56-48 lead at the break on Thursday, scoring 16 first-half points on 7-of-11 shooting.
After the game, the rookie talked about his opponent rather than his play.
"It was fun playing against a great point guard such as Steve Nash," Irving said. "It's a little surreal."
Cleveland led by as many as 10 in the third and took a 79-71 lead into the final quarter. The Suns made it 80-75 early in the fourth on a pair of Hakim Warrick free throws, but Daniel Gibson responded with a three and Alonzo Gee made a layup to re-establish the Cavs' double-digit advantage.
They led by as many as 14 down the stretch, improving to 2-3 on their current road trip.
Game Notes
The Cavaliers will close their trip with games at the Lakers and Bobcats...Redd, an 11-year veteran, signed with the Suns on December 29. He had spent his entire career in Milwaukee.
