Hornets beat Magic to snap 9-game skid

Jan 28, 2012 - 4:28 AM New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Carl Landry netted a team-high 17 points and the New Orleans Hornets rolled over the Orlando Magic, 93-67, on Friday to snap a nine-game losing streak.

Marco Belinelli had 15 points, Jason Smith scored 14 and Jarrett Jack added 11 with nine assists for the Hornets, whose losing streak was a season-high.

"I can look at the stats sheet and point out a number of things, but when I'm in that locker room and in that huddle and the guys are supporting one another, out there fighting for one another and playing the way they played tonight, it makes the prospects in the future for our organization look bright," Hornets head coach Monty Williams said.

Dwight Howard scored 28 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for the Magic, who shot 39.3 percent from the floor and turned the ball over 23 times in their fourth loss in six games.

After trading buckets through the opening 5 1/2 minutes of the game, New Orleans reeled off an 11-0 run to jump out to a 20-11 lead late in the first.

Orlando committed four turnovers in that span, but finished the first with an 8-3 spurt to close the gap to 23-19.

The Magic's run continued into second quarter as they opened the frame by scoring the first four points to knot the game at 23.

However, after J.J. Redick's three-pointer tied the score at 26, the Hornets dominated the rest of the action, outscoring Orlando by a mark of 21-8 for the remainder of the half en route to a 47-34 advantage at the break.

New Orleans held at least a 14-point lead in the third as they shot 57.9 percent from the floor in the frame while holding Orlando to 30.8 percent and took a 93-67 lead into the fourth.

That advantage stretched to as much as 28 points in the fourth as the Hornets cruised to the finish.

"We were just awful," said Magic head coach Stan Van Gaudy. "It didn't matter what we called. We had no energy coming off of screens, the ball didn't move, guys didn't want to shoot the ball. It's very, very bad right now."

Game Notes

Hornets center Chris Kaman was sat out of the game by New Orleans as the Hornets are actively trying to trade him...Howard recorded his 15th double- double of the season...New Orleans improved to 2-9 at home this season, while Orlando fell to 6-4 on the road...The Hornets have won four straight against the Magic and hold a 37-31 lead in the all-time series.
