Jazz host Blazers in Salt Lake City

Jan 30, 2012 - 3:37 PM (Sports Network) - Northwest Division rivals clash in Salt Lake City Monday when the Utah Jazz play host to a Portland team that has struggled away from Rip City.

The Blazers are a gaudy 9-1 at the Rose Garden but just 3-7 as the visitor on the year. Most recently Portland kept the good times rolling on its home floor with a dispatching of Phoenix, 109-71, on Friday.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 23 points in that one as the Blazers dominated the middle two quarters en route to the rout. Gerald Wallace tallied 17 points, Wesley Matthews 16 and Nicolas Batum 14 for the Trail Blazers, who have won three of their last four games and six straight at home.

Marcus Camby pulled down 20 rebounds for the Blazers, who held a 57-21 scoring advantage spanning the second and third quarters and exacted some revenge from a 102-77 loss at Phoenix on Jan. 6.

"They embarrassed us in their hometown," Wallace said. "We were coming off an emotional win on a back-to-back, and they handed it to us."

The Jazz, meanwhile, snapped a brief two-game skid on Saturday in Salt Lake City when Gordon Hayward scored 21 points and C.J. Miles had 20 as Utah survived a three-point attempt by Jimmer Fredette in the final seconds to beat the Sacramento Kings, 96-93.

Fredette missed a deep shot from the right side that could have given the Kings a one-point lead in front of a divided crowd, some of whom were there to cheer for Fredette, the rookie who starred at nearby BYU.

The shot was contested by a rushing Earl Watson and Fredette thought he might have been fouled.

"I caught it, shot it, possibly contact, maybe not. But the ball didn't go in and that's what happens," Fredette said. "It was a tough loss for us."

Al Jefferson added 12 points and Paul Millsap had 14 rebounds as the Jazz held on to improve to 9-3 in Salt lake City.

"It was like a college atmosphere. I loved it," Watson said.

Matthews started his NBA career in Utah as an undrafted rookie two seasons ago and helped the Jazz win a share of the Northwest crown but then signed a five- year, $34 million dollar deal with Portland as a restricted free agent before last season. The Marquette product averaged 19.5 ppg against his old mates a season ago, helping the Blazers take three of four from Utah.

Portland has lost 11 of 14 trips to Utah.
