Reeling Grizzlies entertain Nuggets in Memphis
Jan 31, 2012 - 3:44 PM (Sports Network) - The Denver Nuggets hope to win their sixth straight road game for the first time in nearly a quarter century when they square off with the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum. The Nuggets, who have the Western Conference's second best record at 14-6 despite a 109-105 home loss to the LA Clippers in their last encounter, haven't won six straight away from the Rockies since March 23-April 8, 1988.
"I actually think our mental attitude on the road court has been better- focused than at home," coach George Karl told the Nuggets' website after practice Monday.
Their recent momentum was quelled a bit on Sunday when ex-Nugget Chauncey Billups scored a season-high 32 points as the Clips rallied in the fourth quarter to steal a win.
Nene paced Denver with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Danilo Gallinari had 17 points and Andre Miller contributed 16 points and 10 assists as the Nuggets had their six-game overall winning streak snapped.
"They made shots and we didn't," said Denver forward Al Harrington, who finished with 16 points. "It felt like we got fouled on a couple possessions and got some calls that should of went our way, especially at home, but they didn't."
Part of the problem for Denver may have been the absence of starting point guard Ty Lawson, who missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. The North Carolina product hopes to return to the floor tonight.
The Grizzlies, meanwhile, have hit the skids and dropped their fourth straight game on Monday, a 83-73 home loss to San Antonio. O.J. Mayo had 17 points to pace Memphis in that one but the team's leading scorer, Rudy Gay, was held without a field goal (0-for-7) and finished with just one point.
Mike Conley netted 15 points, but shot just 5-of-14 from the floor in the Grizzlies' fourth straight loss on the heels of a seven-game winning streak. Marc Gasol finished with seven points and 12 rebounds for Memphis.
"Did you see effort out there?" coach Lionel Hollins asked rhetorically. "That's the problem. We're not working."
Memphis, which hasn't dropped five in a row since Nov. 10-19, 2010, has lost 14 of its last 17 vs. the Nuggets.
