Wizards seek third straight road win against Clippers
Feb 15, 2012 - 3:55 PM (Sports Network) - The Washington Wizards will try to extend a rare road winning streak when they face off with an LA Clippers team returning to SoCal for the first time in nearly two weeks. The Wizards have opened up a five-game trek with consecutive wins, first in Auburn Hills on Sunday and then in Rip City on Tuesday.
Nick Young dropped in a game-high 35 points last night as Washington posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 124-109 victory over a Trail Blazers club that lost LaMarcus Aldridge to a sprained ankle early in the game.
John Wall added 29 points and nine assists, while Jordan Crawford contributed 21 points off the bench in the Wizards' first win in Portland since March 28, 2005, snapping a six-game losing streak.
"It just felt good (tonight)," said Young. "Seeing my teammates excited and them hitting shots and us gelling off each other, I feel like we're turning into a good team. We just have to keep learning from it."
Washington, which is 3-10 as the visitor on the year, will finish its trip with visits to Utah and Phoenix after tonight's contest.
The Clippers concluded their annual Grammy Road Trip with a solid 4-2 record but on a losing note after falling in Dallas, 96-92, on Monday.
Ex-Mav Caron Butler was welcomed by a standing ovation when he accepted his NBA championship ring in that one, but the forward received a bigger hand from the American Airlines Center crowd when he missed a potential go-ahead three- pointer in the final seconds.
The errant try allowed the Mavericks to secure the win behind five double- digit scorers and a stifling defense in the fourth quarter.
Butler finished with 23 points and eight rebounds, and Blake Griffin added 20 points and seven boards for Los Angeles. Chris Paul recorded 16 points and nine assists.
Butler was 5-of-9 from long distance before hitting all iron as time wound down. Delonte West corralled the rebound and sank two free throws to clinch the victory.
"I got my feet up under me, followed through, it was a routine shot, just fell a little short. It would have been a great ending to the game," Butler said of his attempt.
The Clippers have won six straight over the Wizards, including a 107-81 drubbing in the nation's capital back on Feb. 4.
