Memphis edges Golden State
Feb 19, 2012 - 4:58 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - For the second straight night, Memphis used a last-second putback to win the game as Tony Allen's tip-in with 5.6 seconds left gave Memphis a 104-103 victory over Golden State at FedEx Forum on Saturday. The Grizzlies had six players in double figures, led by 19 from Rudy Gay. O.J. Mayo chipped in 18 and Marc Gasol had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Memphis, which won its fourth straight game.
Memphis was coming off Friday's last-second victory where Dante Cunningham tipped in a Gay miss at the buzzer to give the Grizzlies a one-point victory over the Nuggets.
"It doesn't have to be pretty, it's just competition," remarked Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins after the game. "You go out and grit it out and play together. The things that are important are what they're accomplishing together out there."
Stephen Curry led the way for Golden State with 36 points and Monta Ellis chipped in 33 as the Warriors dropped their third straight contest.
Much like Friday night Gay had the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game.
Gay dribbled to the right elbow and took a contested jumper that was off the mark but Allen was there for the rebound and putback to give Memphis a 104-103 lead with 5.6 seconds still to play.
After a timeout, Curry inbounded the ball to David Lee, who drove to the basket but Mike Conley stepped in and took the charge to give the ball back to the Grizzlies and seal the victory.
With the game tied at 93, Conley came up with a steal and drove coast-to-coast for the three-point play to put the Grizzlies up 96-93 with 2:03 remaining.
Gasol would pick up a technical on the ensuing possession after he reacted poorly to be calling called for a blocking foul. Golden State knocked down three from the line to nod the game up at 96.
The teams exchanged buckets down the stretch, but Mayo missed two big free throws with 29.3 seconds left and Ekpe Udoh was fouled after grabbing the rebound.
Udoh calmly knocked down both free throws to give Golden State a 103-102 lead with 28.1 seconds on the clock.
"We shouldn't put ourselves in positions to have to fight back," said Golden State head coach Mark Jackson. "Give us credit we didn't quit, we didn't lay down. We fought back, took control of the game and put ourselves in position to win. It's just a tough way to lose."
The Grizzlies came out hot in the first, finishing the quarter at 70 percent from the field to take a 34-19 advantage.
It was a tale of two quarters, however, as Golden State caught fire in the second, opening the frame with a 14-3 run to pull within four. The Warriors would take a 56-54 lead into the locker room as Curry finished the half with 23 points on 5-of-5 shooting from long range.
A back-and-forth third quarter saw the Warriors take a 78-76 lead into the final frame.
