Grizzlies seek more last second magic in Houston

Feb 20, 2012 - 3:52 PM (Sports Network) - Memphis Grizzlies leading scorer Rudy Gay has been bailed out by his teammates in each of the last two victories and will try to take care of his own business tonight against the Houston Rockets in Space City.

Gay's miss in Friday's 103-102 win versus Denver was tipped in at the last second by Dante Cunningham and it was deja-vu all over again in a 104-103 triumph over Golden State on Saturday. Gay fired up an errant shot that was put back by Tony Allen with just 5.6 seconds remaining, lifting the Grizzlies to their fourth straight win and sixth in seven tries.

"Tony bailed me out today," Gay said after the win over the Warriors. "(Friday) it was Dante. I think next time, I have to make the shot."

Gay is averaging 18.9 points per game this season and has come on as of late with 22.2 ppg in his previous six. He had scored 20-plus points in five straight games before falling one point shy of that mark versus Golden State. Memphis is 13-4 this season when Gay hits the 20-point mark.

O.J. Mayo had 18 points off the bench, Marc Gasol added 17 and 13 rebounds and Mike Conley delivered 15 points and six assists for the Grizzlies, who are tied with Houston for third place in the Southwest Division. Marreese Speights and Allen finished with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Speights has averages of 12.6 points and 10.9 rebounds in the past seven games.

The Grizzlies, who own an 8-0 record when scoring 100-plus points, are 6-9 away from Beale Street this season and are a season-high tying four games above .500, the first time the team has gone four games above even since it was 10-6 following a Jan. 23 win at Golden State.

Monday's game against marks Lionel Hollins' 300th game as head coach.

Meanwhile, Houston improved to 2-1 on a six-game homestand and won for the fifth time in eight tries with Sunday's 101-85 victory over Utah.

Rockets guard Kyle Lowry made 9-of-13 shots, including 7-of-8 from downtown, en route to a game-best 32 points. Luis Scola added 26 points and nine rebounds and Kevin Martin finished with 11 for Houston, which is 12-4 at the Toyota Center this season.

"I felt good out there," said Lowry. "That was the best way I've played in a long time, but the thing that really matters is that we won and played great defense in the second half."

The Rockets will also host Philadelphia and Toronto on the homestand and are in search of their 11th straight win over Memphis at home. The Grizzlies, however, have taken the first two meetings of the season -- both at FedEx Forum. Houston is 12-5 in the previous 17 matchups between the clubs.

Memphis is seeking its first win as the guest in this series since a 93-81 triumph on April 15, 2006. Martin has at least 28 points in 12 of his last 15 games against the Grizzlies.
