Spurs take perfect Rodeo Road Trip into Salt Lake City
Feb 20, 2012 - 3:53 PM (Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs needed overtime to keep their winning streak alive and remain perfect on a Rodeo Road Trip the last time out and will take on the Utah Jazz tonight in Salt Lake City. The Spurs played their fourth overtime game this season in Saturday's 103-100 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center, as Tony Parker continued to tear it up with a game-high 30 points and 10 assists. Parker is averaging 27.1 ppg in his last seven games for the Southwest Division-leading Spurs, who have won 10 straight for the first time since Dec. 3-22, 2010 and improved to 6-0 on the annual trek.
Parker joked afterwards about his teammate Gary Neal, who missed a pass from the 6-2 point guard before knocking down a three-pointer late in regulation.
"First of all, I wanted to strangle him because I didn't know what happened," Parker told the team's website. "He lost it, but that can happen to anyone and we kept playing. We got the ball back and he hit a big three. He's known for that."
Neal also buried a big three-pointer in overtime and finished with 17 points, making 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc. Matt Bonner had 13 points and Tim Duncan posted his team-leading 11th double-double with 11 and 17 rebounds, helping San Antonio to a 9-8 mark away from the Alamo City. The Spurs have won seven in a row on the road for the first time since opening last season with eight consecutive victories on foreign ground.
Duncan is posting 15.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.00 blocks during his team's current winning streak. In injury news for the Spurs, forward Tiago Splitter is slated to miss Monday's game in Utah with a strained right calf and played less than three minutes against the Clippers. Guard Manu Ginobili appeared in his fourth game since missing 22 in a row with a broken bone in his hand and recorded two points in less than 19 minutes. Ginobili was apparently dealing with an oblique issue in LA.
The last time San Antonio won 11 in a row overall was during a 12-game run from Nov. 1 - 24, 2010. It will also visit the Blazers and Nuggets on the current trek and sports an impressive 16-7 mark against the West. The Spurs are also 13-5 during a stretch of 16 of 21 games on the road.
Utah hasn't fared so well in February with a lowly 3-8 record and hopes to stay strong at home with the Spurs in town.
The Jazz dropped a 101-85 decision at Houston on Sunday, as Al Jefferson led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jefferson left the game with a stomach issue and should be in the lineup Monday. Paul Millsap registered 22 points and Raja Bell added 11 for Utah, which has lost three in a row on the road and fell to 3-10 away from home this season.
"We just didn't make shots at the end of the fourth quarter," Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin said. "In the second half we got away from what we were doing early in the game. We just didn't have enough to finish."
Bell went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and has now recorded a three-pointer in 18 straight games. Jefferson owns four double-doubles in his last five games.
Utah is a respectable 12-5 at home and lost at San Antonio, 104-89, back on Dec. 31 this season. The Jazz have dropped four straight and eight of the past 12 meetings with the Spurs, but actually own a 6-3 record in the past nine home encounters with San Antonio.
