Grizzlies entertain Pistons at FedEx Forum
Mar 3, 2012 - 3:52 PM (Sports Network) - The Memphis Grizzlies have picked up the pace lately and will shoot for a fourth straight win tonight versus the Detroit Pistons at FedEx Forum. The Grizzlies have prevailed in three straight and nine of their last 11 games, and are coming off last night's 102-99 victory in Toronto. Rudy Gay scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and made the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds left for Memphis, which is just four games behind San Antonio for the top spot in the Southwest Division.
"In the first half we were letting them run up and down the court and we had to play harder and make some adjustments," said Gay.
Marc Gasol and Mike Conley had 21 points apiece in the narrow victory, while O.J. Mayo finished with 16 points.
Memphis has won five in a row on Beale Street and will hit the road for three games after tonight's tilt with Detroit. The Grizzlies, who own a 14-5 home mark this season, are scheduled to visit Golden State, Phoenix and Denver on the western trek.
Detroit was able to halt a three-game slide with Wednesday's 109-94 victory versus the Charlotte Bobcats in the finale of a brief residency at The Palace.
Rodney Stuckey poured in a game-high 29 points and Brandon Knight finished with 20 and five assists in the win. Greg Monroe added 19 points to go with a career-high 20 rebounds, while Tayshaun Prince also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons.
"I thought we put more (effort) into the game tonight," Pistons head coach Lawrence Frank said. "I think we invested more into the game and played harder."
Monroe is averaging 21.0 points and 12.6 rebounds in his last five games, while Stuckey is posting 20.3 ppg in his past eight. Prince is four games shy of 700 in his career.
The Pistons are last in the Central Division and 3-14 as the guest. They will return home for three games following Saturday's affair in Memphis. Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva has appeared in only two games this season and has been hampered by a right ankle injury. He is questionable for tonight.
Detroit suffered a 98-81 loss to Memphis on Jan. 20 this season and has lost four in a row in this series. However, the Pistons have won eight of the 10 meetings in Memphis.
