Nets, Bobcats square off in Charlotte
Mar 4, 2012 - 3:53 PM (Sports Network) - Two of the worst the East has to offer clash tonight in Charlotte, where the Bobcats will entertain the New Jersey Nets. The Bobcats are an abysmal 4-30 on the year and have lost four in a row, including Friday's 102-72 blowout loss at San Antonio. Corey Maggette and Boris Diaw both scored 14 points for Charlotte, which shot just 37.3 percent and made only 3-of-16 from three-point range.
"We have got to be a better shooting team," Maggette said. "When you're playing one of the best teams in the league and you're shooting 30-plus percent, it's hard for anybody to win."
Maggette has scored in double figures in eight straight games, including a season-high 22 points against Philadelphia on Feb. 13. Charlotte will begin a four-game homestand Sunday versus the Nets, Magic, Jazz and Nets again, and is only 2-12 as the host this season. Rookie Kemba Walker had just eight points, but has scored in double figures in eight of his last 11 games.
Charlotte is in the basement of the Southeast Division.
In injury news for the Bobcats, center Bismack Biyombo is listed as questionable for this evening's game with a strained left shoulder.
New Jersey, meanwhile, has alternated wins and losses over its previous seven games and will continue a four-game road trip tonight.
The Nets are coming off Friday's 107-94 setback at Boston, as Brook Lopez led the way with 28 points and Deron Williams added 12 and eight assists. MarShon Brooks netted 11 points and is questionable Sunday with a sore left hand. New Jersey had just beaten Dallas on Tuesday in the opener of the road swing.
"We can't play with one arm, we got to be ambidextrous, we got to be balanced and I thought we were balanced in our last game," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "We didn't have anything going well for us tonight left or right. We weren't very good offensively, we weren't very good defensively."
Johnson's team will close out the trip at Miami on Tuesday and is 8-13 away from the Garden State this season. Lopez is averaging a team-best 22.5 points in four games this season. Double-double threat Kris Humphries was held to six points and five rebounds against the rival Celtics.
New Jersey is last in the Atlantic Division and defeated Charlotte, 97-87, in the first meeting of the season back on Jan. 22 at home. Brooks tallied a game-high 20 points in that one for the Nets, who have still lost four of six meetings in this series.
The Nets have won 10 of the 13 contests at Charlotte.
