Wolves welcome Clippers to town

Mar 5, 2012 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - Minnesota will attempt to top the Pacific Division-leading Clippers for the second time in a week when the two teams square off in the Twin Cities.

The Wolves got the best of the Clips at Staples Center last Tuesday when Derrick Williams and Michael Beasley both came off the bench and scored 27 points apiece in a 109-97 win, Minnesota's second against the Clippers in Hollywood this season.

LA has regrouped a bit since then, taking two of three at the start of a grueling six-game road trip and keeping a slim percentage points lead over the Lakers in the Pacific.

Most recently Chris Paul had 28 points and 10 assists as the Clippers beat the Houston Rockets, 105-103, in overtime Sunday. Paul had three of his 28 points in overtime after holding the ball too long on the last possession of regulation and getting off a shot that came after the buzzer.

Randy Foye added 15 points while Blake Griffin, Caron Butler and Mo Williams scored 14 apiece for the Clippers, who improved to 9-8 on the road this season.

"This is a win we needed considering the Lakers won (against Miami)," said Griffin. "We needed to start building momentum going into this road trip."

After tonight the Clips will finish the trip by visiting the Nets and Spurs.

Conversely Minnesota, which is kicking off a four-game homestand tonight, has lost two of three since topping the Clippers last week, falling at the Lakers and Suns before rebounding and closing a four-game trek with a 122-110 triumph in Portland on Saturday.

Kevin Love poured in 42 points, one off a career-high, in that one, helping the Timberwolves snap a 16-game skid vs. the Trail Blazers.

Love, who played at Lake Oswego High School, about 20 minutes outside Portland, went 15-of-27 from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. The All-Star also had 10 rebounds, as Minnesota beat the Blazers for the first time since March 25, 2007. It was also the team's first triumph at Portland since Dec. 7, 2005.

"I just played in the moment, didn't really worry about being back at home," Love said.

Former Blazer Martell Webster had 21 points and eight rebounds. Williams scored 15 and Ricky Rubio dished out 12 assists and had two steals, as Minnesota ended its two-game slide.

The Wolves, who are 10-10 at Target Center this season, will finish their residency by hosting Portland, the Lakers and New Orleans.
