Bargnani scores eight points in preseason debut

Oct 10, 2006 - 2:49 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Andrea Bargnani era officially has begun.

The top overall pick in the 2006 draft had eight points and four rebounds as the Toronto Raptors posted a 93-88 victory over the Washington Wizards in the preseason opener for both teams.

The 7-foot Bargnani made 3-of-6 shots from the floor, including both of his 3-point attempts, but also committed five fouls in 13 minutes.

Bargnani averaged 11.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 21.7 minutes per game for Benetton Treviso of the Italian League last season. He shot 57.8 percent from the field, including 36.9 percent on 3-pointers.

Rookie Jorge Garbajosa's 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining snapped a tie and fellow Spaniard Jose Calderon iced the victory with two free throws with 25.7 seconds left.

Last season, Garbajosa averaged 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds while leading Unicaja to the Spanish ACB regular-season championship and was named MVP of the Spanish Cup Finals for the second consecutive year.

Fred Jones scored 17 points and Chris Bosh added 14 for the Raptors, who shot just 38 percent (27-of-71) from the floor, but did convert 10-of-24 from the arc. Jones scored 11 straight points during a stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters to give Toronto a 77-74 lead with 8:39 left.

Gilbert Arenas looked like he was in midseason form for the Wizards, hitting on 8-of-12 from the floor for 29 points in 30 minutes before sitting out the final period. Jarvis Hayes scored 14 points, including 12 straight at one point, and Antawn Jamison added 11 and seven rebounds.

Hayes was making his first appearance since undergoing knee surgery in February. He has missed most of the last two seasons with a broken right knee cap.
