Clippers, Hawks square off in LA
Mar 14, 2012 - 2:57 PM (Sports Network) - The reeling Los Angeles Clippers will try to steady the ship a bit on Wednesday when they resume a six-game homestand against the Atlanta Hawks. The Clips have lost two straight to start the residency and eight of 12 overall to fall two games behind their Staples Center rivals, the Lakers, in the Pacific Division.
The Clippers latest setback came on Monday when Paul Pierce scored 25 points and made some clutch shots down the stretch, helping the Boston Celtics earn a 94-85 win.
Blake Griffin ended with 24 points and nine boards for the Clip-show, who have also lost three straight as the host. Mo Williams and Chris Paul had 21 and 14 points, respectively.
"Another difficult game for us," Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro said.
The Hawks, meanwhile, fell to 2-3 on a six-game road trip, suffering a tough 118-117 overtime loss in Denver on Tuesday.
Nene's free throws with 26.6 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference in that one as the final two of his 22 points helped lead the Nuggets to the victory.
The Hawks had a final shot with 3.5 seconds left after Zaza Pachulia caught an inbounds pass in the lane, but his layup was long and Denver secured the rebound.
Joe Johnson led all scorers with 34 points and Josh Smith added 33 to go with 13 rebounds and seven assists before fouling out in overtime. Kirk Hinrich netted 22 points for Atlanta.
Hinrich also had a chance to win the game for the Hawks in regulation as he stepped to line with 1.1 seconds left and his team down one, but he managed just 1-of-2 from the stripe to send the game to an extra frame.
"That was disturbing," said Hinrich after the game. "I made the harder one, the first one. And I couldn't make the last one at the end of the game."
Atlanta has won four straight over the Clippers and three in a row as the visitor in this series.
