Hawks, Cavs meet again down south
Mar 21, 2012 - 2:49 PM (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Hawks will shoot for their second win over Cleveland in four days when they resume a three-game homestand against the Cavaliers at Philips Arena.Joe Johnson scored 28 points on Sunday as the Hawks earned a 103-87 victory at Cleveland, their sixth straight over the Cavs.
Atlanta couldn't follow up on that, however, dropping a 79-76 decision to Boston in the opener of the residency on Monday. Johnson had a game-high 25 points in that one.
"We were right where we wanted to be. ... We just wanted to give ourselves a chance to win," Johnson said. "We just missed a lot of shots we normally make."
Zaza Pachulia posted his sixth double-double of the month with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Josh Smith added 10 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in defeat.
The Hawks, who are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference, are 13-7 at Philips Arena this season and will close their brief homestand against the New Jersey Nets on Friday.
The Cavs, meanwhile, halted a three-game skid in New Jersey on Monday when Tristan Thompson scored 27 points and fellow rookie Kyrie Irving had 26 as Cleveland downed the Nets, 105-100.
Thompson added 12 rebounds, Irving handed out seven assists and Antawn Jamison had 13 points and 13 boards for the Cavaliers, who closed the contest with an 8-3 run to stop their losing streak.
"It was definitely a game where we were both hitting, and some of the reliance fell on me and Tristan," said Irving. "You know, Tristan was making big plays, like you said with the tip-in, so it felt good. Everybody contributed tonight. I think a couple of people on our team were in double figures. So when we're contributing like that, and everybody's on the same page, it feels good."
Cleveland, which is 8-12 on the road this season, will finish a three-game trek in Orlando on Friday.
