Spurs down Suns

Mar 28, 2012 - 5:13 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Tim Duncan dropped in 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs topped the Phoenix Suns, 107-100, at US Airways Center on Tuesday.

Tony Parker finished with 24 points and handed out seven assists, while Kawhi Leonard contributed 14 points and seven boards and Manu Ginobili added 13 points and five assists for the Spurs, who have won five consecutive games. Matt Bonner rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Shannon Brown drained five three-pointers en route to a career-high 32 points to pace the Suns, while Marcin Gortat had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and Steve Nash added 16 points and eight assists. Sebastian Telfair donated 11 points for Phoenix, which saw its two-game win streak come to an end.

Trailing, 79-74, with 4:50 to go in the third quarter, the Spurs closed the frame on a 10-4 burst to take an 84-83 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

A Robin Lopez reverse layup less than two minutes into the final stanza pulled the Suns within 88-87, but the Spurs pulled away from there, using a 13-2 flurry to expand the lead to 101-89, capped by a deep Leonard three-pointer, with 5:24 to play.

"On offense we had a good run, especially in the fourth quarter," Parker said. "They missed a couple of shots...and then we started having a good run for us in the fourth quarter."

The Suns kept fighting and cut the lead to five with 33.9 seconds left on a driving layup by Brown, but Parker sank four key free throws around a Channing Frye dunk to seal the win for San Antonio.

"I thought we started well offensively, but we weren't very good defensively," Suns head coach Alvin Gentry said. "We gave up a couple of crucial offensive rebounds and turned the ball over late, and they did a great job of controlling the game late."

After a tightly played first quarter that featured five ties and three lead changes, the Spurs held a 29-28 advantage.

San Antonio opened the second quarter with an 11-4 burst to extend the lead to eight, 40-32, around four minutes into in the frame.

A three-pointer by Telfair with 6 1/2 minutes to go before halftime pulled the Suns within three, but San Antonio answered with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to nine.

A trey by Bonner gave the Spurs a 59-51 lead with 1:30 to play in the half and they led 62-57 at the break.

It was Gortat's 27th double-double of the season...San Antonio had 18 second- chance points, while allowing Phoenix only eight second-chance points...Suns forward Grant Hill did not play due to right knee inflammation...Frye added seven points and seven rebounds for the Suns...The Suns converted 10 San Antonio turnovers into 17 points...The Spurs had the edge on the glass, outrebounding Phoenix, 48-38...San Antonio shot 48.9 percent from the floor, while the Suns shot 47.1 percent.
