Sinking Timberwolves hit the Big Easy, face Hornets
Apr 7, 2012 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Timberwolves have pretty much played themselves out of a postseason spot, but at least they can enjoy life in the Big Easy when they visit the New Orleans Hornets tonight.Minnesota is 5 1/2 games off the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference with 10 games to play, and has dropped four straight and 12 of the past 16 contests. The Timberwolves are 12-17 as the visitor this season and have lost two straight away from the Twin Cities.
The Timberwolves suffered a 97-94 home loss to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, as Kevin Love scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but finished 0-for-7 from beyond the arc, including the potential game-tying three-pointer as time expired.
"They just fought their way back to a win," said Love. "You have to hand it to them, they played well and we had a major letdown on defense."
Wayne Ellington scored 17 points and J.J. Barea ended with 15 for the Wolves, who shot 42.5 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers, leading to 24 Golden State points. Barea had missed the past six games with a thigh bruise.
Wolves forward Michael Beasley missed his fifth consecutive game because of a toe injury and is questionable for Saturday. Center Darko Milicic (hamstring) is also questionable against the Hornets. Milicic has been absent the last three contests.
New Orleans was no match for the sizzling San Antonio Spurs on Friday, falling in the Alamo City 128-103.
Eric Gordon had 31 points in his second game back from knee surgery for the Hornets, who are a dismal 14-41 on the season and finished 0-4 versus the Spurs. Marco Belinelli and Carl Landry ended with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
"They (San Antonio) have won championships and they know how to win," Hornets guard Greivis Vasquez said. "They have Manu [Ginobili], [Tim] Duncan, and [Tony] Parker and everybody else doing their job, but they just played a lot harder than us tonight. They made some good additions and they are a good team."
New Orleans guard Jarrett Jack missed the game due to a sore right ankle and will likely miss a third straight contest tonight for the Hornets, who also continue to play without injured big man Emeka Okafor.
NOLA and Timberwolves have split the first two meetings of the season with each club winning on the road. Minnesota has lost six of nine and seven of its last 11 trips to the Big Easy.
