Spurs snap skid, top Grizzlies

Apr 13, 2012 - 5:01 AM San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Tim Duncan scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half and added 12 rebounds, as the San Antonio Spurs took down the Memphis Grizzlies, 107-97, on Thursday.

Manu Ginobili, who was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, netted 20 points to go with six boards and four assists for San Antonio, which snapped a two-game skid on the heels of an 11-game winning streak. Tony Parker had 13 points to go with nine assists.

"We got back on track," said Duncan. "That was the key to the whole thing. We played awful against the Lakers and we got blown out. We came back in here tonight, against another good team, and (gave) a much better effort."

The Spurs moved a half-game behind the idle Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Rudy Gay had 19 points for the Grizzlies, who had won seven of their last eight contests coming in.

"It was a battle. They pressured us, played aggressive and played physical defense on us," Gay said.

Memphis dropped 1 1/2 games behind the Clippers, who defeated Minnesota on Thursday, for the fourth seed in the West.

The Grizzlies attempted to rally from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit as Ginobili's layup gave San Antonio an 88-74 lead with 9:37 remaining.

Memphis netted 11 straight points later in the frame, and O.J. Mayo's three- pointer pulled the Grizzlies within 94-92 with 2:54 left, but they never got any closer.

Danny Green proceeded to hit a pair of free throws and after Marc Gasol made 1-of-2 from the stripe, Duncan's three-point play gave the Spurs a 99-93 edge with 1:51 to play.

Ginobili made six free throws in the final 57 seconds to seal the win for San Antonio.

Parker tallied 11 points and dished out four assists in the opening stanza as San Antonio took a 27-21 advantage into the second.

But the Grizzlies used a 13-0 run in the second frame to build a 44-36 margin before taking a 49-45 halftime advantage.

It was the Spurs, though, who used a 13-4 flurry to close the third, taking an 82-74 edge into the fourth.
