Bobcats lose franchise record 17th in a row
Apr 17, 2012 - 5:05 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Greivis Vasquez poured in 20 points and dished out six assists as the New Orleans Hornets topped the Charlotte Bobcats, 75-67, at Time Warner Cable Arena on Monday.Carl Landry contributed 14 points to go with 12 rebounds, while Marco Belinelli added 13 points for the Hornets, who have won four straight and six of their last eight games.
Gerald Henderson dropped in a game-high 27 points, Kemba Walker added 14 points and five rebounds, and Byron Mullens pulled down 10 rebounds to go with four points for the Bobcats, who lost for a franchise-record 17th straight time.
With the game tied at 47 after three quarters, the Hornets opened up a six- point lead on a running jumper by Vasquez, but the Bobcats fought back and two free throws by Henderson made it 55-54 New Orleans with just over three minutes played in the final quarter.
Belinelli drained a big three-pointer with 5 1/2 minutes to go to give the Hornets a 63-56 lead.
Henderson kept the Bobcats close though, and put home a layup with 1:09 left to make it a one-possession game, 66-64.
The Hornets sank their free throws over the final minute of action to escape with the victory.
After a back-and-forth first quarter which featured six ties and five lead changes, the Bobcats held a slim 15-14 advantage.
A pair of Belinelli free throws with just over five minutes left in the second frame gave the Hornets an eight-point advantage, 29-21, but the Bobcats stayed within striking distance and a jumper by Walker with 1:39 left put Charlotte ahead 32-31.
The Bobcats led 39-35 at halftime.
Charlotte scored five of the first seven points in the third quarter to extend the lead to seven with five minutes to go in the stanza, but it couldn't hold the advantage and New Orleans closed the frame with a 10-3 burst to tie the game heading into the final period.
"It was awful basketball," Bobcats assistant coach Stephen Silas said. "The fact that we were getting stop after stop after stop was good, but the ball wasn't going in the hoop for us. It's tough to win when you shoot 30 percent."
