Timberwolves aim for rare April winning streak vs. Warriors
Apr 22, 2012 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - The Timberwolves finally know what it feels like to win in April again. Now Minnesota will aim to win consecutive games in the month for the first time in three years when they welcome the Golden State Warriors to the Twin Cities.
The Timberwolves snapped an ugly 11-game skid and an even uglier 27-game April losing streak with a 91-80 win at Detroit on Thursday.
Nikola Pekovic led all scorers with 23 points and added nine rebounds in that one as Minnesota led wire-to-wire despite playing without superstar Kevin Love for a fifth straight game due to a concussion.
Anthony Randolph netted 15 points and grabbed 10 boards, J.J. Barea finished with 13 points and 12 assists and Michael Beasley contributed 13 points off the bench for Minnesota.
"This one's big, it's good for our team," Barea said. "I think we defended and we had energy today, we moved the ball really good"
The Timberwolves last win in the month was April 8, 2009 at Golden State.
The Warriors, who will be playing their third game in as many nights tonight, lost their eighth straight game in Houston on Saturday, a 99-96 setback to the Rockets.
Rookie Klay Thompson netted 24 points for shorthanded Golden State, while Brandon Rush had 19 points off the bench and Charlie Jenkins contributed 16 points and eight assists.
"He can put the ball on the floor and he's a under-rated passer, and he is good on the defensive end, he's going to be a heck of a player," Golden State head coach Mark Jackson said of Thompson.
With guard Stephen Curry (sprained right ankle) and center Andrew Bogut (broken left ankle) already shut down for the season long ago the Warriors did the same with star forward David Lee, who is struggling with groin and hip problems, last week.
Golden State has won seven of its past nine meetings with the Wolves.
