Carney's 3-pointer tops unlikely comeback by 76ers
Oct 10, 2006 - 10:30 PM COLOGNE, Germany (Ticker) -- Rookie Rodney Carney put to the closing touches on a surprising comeback.Carney hit the decisive 3-pointer with 10.5 seconds remaining as the Philadelphia 76ers rallied from a huge third-quarter deficit for a 103-100 victory over the Phoenix Suns in an NBA Europe Live preseason contest.
Using a 36-13 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters to overcome a 22-point deficit, the 76ers advanced to play CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. The Russian squad beat Maccabi Tel Aviv, 90-81, in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, a rematch of last season's Euroleague championship.
CSKA Moscow has already played an NBA squad this preseason, beating the Los Angeles Clippers, 94-75, in the Russian capital Saturday.
A layup by two-time MVP Steve Nash gave Phoenix a 100-98 lead with less than 1 1/2 minutes remaining, Andre Iguodala split a pair of free throws. Phoenix missed a pair of 3-pointers, setting up Carney, the 16th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls who was acquired in a draft-day deal.
On the left wing, Carney took a pass from a driving Rick Brunson and sank his second 3-pointer of the game for a 102-100 lead.
Leandro Barbosa missed another shot from the arc, and Brunson was fouled on the rebound. The journeyman point guard split two free throws with 0.7 seconds to close the scoring.
Carney scored 14 points in 25-plus minutes off the bench.
In an arena filled with kids wearing variations of his No. 3 jersey, Philadelphia's Allen Iverson scored 29 points on 9-of-19 shooting despite resting most of the second half. Kyle Korver chipped in 20 points.
Shawn Marion led the Suns with 25 points, making 10-of-20 shots. Nash scored 15 points.
Suns star power forward Amare Stoudemire, who sat out the previous preseason game with soreness in both knees, came off the bench midway through the first quarter and had six points and six rebounds in 17 minutes.
